G20 AS-Interface Module: Effective Control of DC Motor Rollers in Conveyor Applications

2018-03-21

G20 AS-Interface Module for DC Motor Rollers
The G20 minimizes the effort required for wiring motor starters and enables pre-assembly of flexible conveyor segments

Engineers who work with roller conveyor systems for warehouse applications are faced with a set of challenging demands. Their solutions ensure that their customers’ needs are met in terms of handling speed, reliability, energy efficiency, and cost. Pepperl+Fuchs introduces the G20 family of AS-Interface modules. The fully integrated control module for DC motor rollers (MDRs) is specifically designed to help meet the speed, cost, and energy constraints of the most demanding customers and applications.

The G20 minimizes the effort required for wiring motor starters and paves the way for a completely new approach. It ensures reliable motor operation through its tailor-made functionalities and enables pre-assembly of flexible conveyor segments – boosting build speed and operating efficiency of MDR designs for both the conveyor builders and their customers.

Mounting AS-Interface modules into the frame of roller conveyor systems

With a mounting depth of just 27 mm, the G20 can be mounted right into the frame of a roller conveyor, making wiring completely invisible. Mounting inside the frame is easy, without the need for additional installation tools. The module is enclosed by an impact-and-shock-resistant, durable plastic housing with a one-piece design that puts an end to cumbersome and time-consuming device assembly. Sensors and MDRs are connected using integrated motor and sensor cordsets that boost installation speed while reducing connectivity expenses and overall complexity.

Better installation of conveyor segments

Once the module has been attached to the conveyor frame, inserting the AS-Interface and AUX flat cables is the final step of the mounting procedure. This considerably easier and quicker wiring method frees manufacturers of conveyor systems from complicated and time-consuming wiring procedures at the customer’s facility; time that most ordinary motor starters require. Using AS-Interface in general and the G20 in particular, entire conveyor systems, including all other control components, can easily be split into manageable segments – pre-assembled, ready to be transported, tested, and extended independently from one another.

Wide variety of motor roller control options and high safety standards

In terms of functionality and safety, the G20 is state-of-the-art. The new module is equipped with 2 sensor inputs, 2 motor control outputs, and 2 motor power connections, allowing perfect control granularity for all MDR applications. G20 provides up to 5 A starting current for each motor. Application flexibility is enhanced through numerous, configurable speed settings, acceleration profiles, and the ability to easily change the direction of rotation. Finally, the G20 offers high safety standards, providing an integrated melting fuse for each DC motor – no additional fuses are needed.

An additional voltage limiter in the G10 housing intercepts excess feedback current that can occur when the roller conveyors are stopped. This prevents any overvoltage shutdown of the power supply. The compact G10 limiter can be easily attached to the flat cable to compensate for the current return of up to four roller motors.

As a supplement to the G20 MDR module, another member of the G20 family is the ideal solution for purely digital control specifically designed for valve control, track switches, stoppers, and non-adjustable drives. Together, these modules redefine MDR control and offer conveyor manufacturers the tools to address the needs of their customers.
