Power Hub

Group Overview: Power Hub

Power Hub and high-density Power Hub

The Power Hub is a modular, motherboard-based power supply system for one or more FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 segments. It consists of a motherboard and various plug-in modules. Optimized electrical symmetry and use of passive components ensure the fieldbus signal quality even under severe environmental conditions. For applications demanding the highest reliability, you can choose redundant configurations.

The low heat dissipation of the Power Hub results in high operating efficiency and allows a very long service life. The Power Hubs are designed to accommodate the revolutionary Advanced Diagnostics Module HD2-DM-A for online and real-time monitoring of the fieldbus physical layer.

The 500 mA Power Hub supplies up to 31 V and 500 mA. It is designed to offer the best signal quality using CREST: Crosstalk and Resonance Suppression Technology. Filtering circuits always ensure optimal signal quality and the longest cable runs in the industry today.

The high-density Power Hub puts up to 25 V and 360 mA on the cable. The small size and standard redundancy make this a very popular choice for many fieldbus projects.

Custom configurations are designed for easy integration of fieldbus segments with host systems. Host-specific connections and even host controllers are integrated in the design. These custom solutions exist for most control systems and are available through the DCS company of your choice.

Explosion protection

Implementing the High-Power Trunk Concept, the Power Hub supplies 500 mA to the segment. Energy limitation for hazardous area protection is realized close to the field instruments through Segment Protectors and FieldBarriers for all hazardous areas up to Zone 1/ Div 1. The Power Hub itself can be installed in Zone 2/ Div 2.

The High-density Power Hub MBHD* with selected power supply modules enables intrinsic saftey Ex ic, FISCO, and Entity. The power supplies limit the voltage for explosion protection. The R2 Segment Protector limits the current. In combination, the two provide intrinsic safety Ex ic for each spur.

Motherboards

Motherboards are base units of the FieldConnex Power Hub system. They are installed on a DIN-Rail. All connections in the cabinet are through the motherboard, allowing for simple installation: fieldbus segment, bulk power supply, DCS, self supervision, and diagnostic alarm contact. Terminals are plug-in type and feature retaining screws for high reliability and durability.

The motherboards hold all plug-in modules of the Power Hub system. The modules can be exchanged without tools, and during system operation. In redundant configuration this exchange will be bumpless. All electronics are passive giving the motherboards a long-lasting service life.

Power Modules

Power Modules feed up to 500 mA current per segment. Simple design and passive impedance generation contribute to industry leading high availability. They are available in two versions:

  • Power supply module with galvanic isolation and a choice of controlled output voltages for topologies in safe areas, and for explosion protection methods according to FISCO and FNICO
  • Power conditioner module that conditions the existing bulk power. The voltage is not controlled. The conditioner features current limitation and lowest heat dissipation without galvanic isolation

The Basic Diagnostic Module communicates status information of the Power Hub via dry alarm contact. It supervises primary and secondary bulk power, internal faults, and incompatible Power Modules in redundant configuration.
